Pre-College Why Engineering Survey

For the past three years, UCF-CECS has tracked engineering professionals for purposes of better understanding what decisions they made during their early education, during their college education and on into the workplace.  This information has been very useful in helping to plan pre-college engineering events such as the Engineers Future Forum.  It is called the "Why Engineering Survey" and additional details to include past surveys are located at http://partner.cecs.ucf.edu/whyeng/.

This is the first year the Office of Educational Partnerships has extended the survey to include pre-college students to determine their interest in pursuing engineering as a career.  200+ ninth through eleventh grade students at Lyman and Edgewater High Schools were the first group to participate.  Their information was used to compare with ASME engineers who participated in the Why Engineering Survey.  The results were presented to the students during each forum to demonstrate similarities between their responses and practicing engineers' responses.  Their information was also used for the two Forum's general question/answer sessions and to determine which speakers should be recruited for the two events.   72% of the students who attended the forums found the comparison to be very useful and 26% found it to be somewhat useful.  One of the engineer speakers remarked, "It gave the students a good idea how their perception of the engineering field matched up to those of real engineers."

The following is a breakdown of the questions and student responses.

Why are you interested in this particular field at this time?
  • Because it is interesting and I like to solve problems.
  • It interests me because I would like to study the concepts and possibly use them in other areas of specialization
  • I want to learn how these type of things work.
  • Because I am a student pilot, and my grandfather was one, and I think that it is a good field to get into
  • I have had an interest in Aeronautics and Astronautics since i was very young. This interest has only grown larger as I have become older.
  • because I think airplanes and space are very interesting
  • Advancing in medicine and other things.
  • i want to learn how to design a house.
  • I am interested in this field because it involves the creations of great Structures.
  • Because I like to make floor plans, and to draw.
  • i like legos so yea also this is fun
  • because i like it
  • I am interested in this field because I like to design buildings.
  • Becuase i like to design and trouble shoot other peoples designs
  • That is the part of the engineering program that I chose. I have always been interested in it. Ever since I studied the Panthenon and The Cathedral of Florence
  • i have always liked it but recently i have started to get into it more
  • I have alwasy liked archecture and the design of buildings and other things. I Also draw and have a three dimentional mind as i am told and feel that this would be a good experience and it would benefit me.
  • I am interested in this field because I like using computer and drawing things.
  • i had always like to make house in my time or design thing that i see in my head.
  • I choose this field becuase I like to draw things that can be built. I have always liked to draw buildings and houses
  • Because my dad wants me to do it and I guess its fun.
  • because i went to a architects offices and thought it was pretty interesting.
  • i am interseted in making buildings and designing things that other people can live in and things that they like!
  • I like drafting
  • i have an artistic talent that has always made me admire the work and archetecture of houses and other modernized buildings. ive also always liked engineering and building things since most of the people in my family are some sort of engineer, so i have grown up around all types of engineering.
  • I am interested beacuse building things and designig thigs sound interesting to me
  • i enjoy computers.
  • I have always been somewhat inresed in archeecure for a long time. I love to draw alo and I am very fascinated wih what it takes to consruc a building and makes it stand on is own even through he force eerted down on it and around it.
  • beacouse my parents have built many custom homes and i love to think of new ideas and desinghns for homes.
  • I am interested in architectural engineering because i want to go to Mississippi state university's engineering program.
  • Architectual Engineering has always been an interest of my since i was young. Many people I know are architects.
  • i don't know i just want to see what i like
  • I am interested in architectural design because of the skills it requires. At a young age, I found that I loved building and that it was easy to form 3-D building plans in my mind. My spatial IQ is higher than the average score. I figured this job would require that skill, so I took up an interest to architecutal design.
  • i've alwas liked to design layouts of different things adn i lov eto build and put things together.
  • Because I like building and creating small models of any thing I think would be cool.
  • because i am taking the class in high school and i will be specializing in it.
  • IBecause I have always thought of becoming and architect ever since I was about 10 years old. plus the money not bad.
  • always been interested in designing buildings and such
  • builing and designing of homes sounds interesting and combines hobbies i am good at; art and math
  • I like drawing on CAD. I don't have any interest in being an actual architect but only to do the drafting
  • because i like to build things and create new things. i like the way people can walk through your creations someday.
  • Ive always wanted to become an architect as a kid and I want to pursue that dream.
  • I like designing houses for fun and I enjoy analyzing houses inside and out. I am also taking a class in drafting in school.
  • I am interestied in this field because I have always wondered about the building and providing homes for others.
  • Catapults and technology
  • Becasue when I get older I want to build cars, preferably in the area of race cars. NASCAR has really caught my eye and I'm very interested in working as an engineer on the building team of one of the teams.
  • I am interested in this because I play sports and when an injury happens I would like to know how to tell what is wrong with it and how to treat it.
  • it sounds interesting
  • Because it is a natural science, and it's interested me for a while now.
  • because that fields is interesting to me and seems to hold a lot of cool jobs
  • Because I enjoy working with mechanics.
